【Hong Kong: Day and Night】
During day me, some people search for their own brightness, to secure their own sense of living. At night, some people work through darkness to care, to heal, to connect, to be there when they are needed.
Last semester, our lyrics writing course collaborated – for the first time – with HKBU’s Centre for Innovative Service-Learning as well as social enterprise Every Life Is a Song. We decided to create songs for, and dedicate them to, those fellow Hong Kong people less heard whether during daytime or at night.
We invited 34 of them. Their songs, their stories, and our encounters with them will be premiered during two evenings’ performances.
We sincerely invite you to join us:
【Hong Kong: Day】:17-2-2019 (Sun)

Speaker: Prof Will Straw, James McGill Professor of Urban Media Studies in the Department of Art History and Communications Studies at McGill University.
"The Night and the City: Music and Policy"
Abstract:
In recent years, across much of the world, music has become the focus of new interest on the part of city governments. Even as national music policies have found themselves challenged by digitization and changes in the structure of the music industries, cities have moved in to embrace music’s capacity to attract tourists, generate income and foster certain forms of social well-being. Music has become central, as well, to the ways in which cities are thinking about their night-time cultures, even as gentrification and complaints over noise have rendered the health of musical cultures in large cities uncertain. This talk will look at the ways in which cities now view music through the prism of urban cultural policy.
Biography:
Will Straw is James McGill Professor of Urban Media Studies in the Department of Art History and Communications Studies at McGill University in Montreal . He is the author of Cyanide and Sin : Visualizing Crime in 50s America (Andrew Roth Gallery, 2006) and co-editor of several volumes of writing on cities, night, popular culture and music. His most recent contributions include the Oxford Handbook to Canadian Cinema (co-edited with Janine Marchessault) and Improvisation and Social Aesthetics (co-edited with Eric Lewis and Georgina Born.) He runs a blog theurbannight.com tracking developments in night culture around the world.

CREATIVE WRITING IN THE ACADEMY
2016-11-11
Home to Hong Kong’s first and only bilingual BA degree in creative writing, the Creative and Professional Writing Programme at Hong Kong Baptist University is proud to host Creative Writing in the Academy: An International Symposium on 11-12 November 2016. This event explores the nature of English and Chinese-language creative writing as an academic discipline at the tertiary level. We examine the international rise of creative writing programmes from historical, pedagogical and ideological perspectives by fostering a dialogue with prominent international and local writers who teach creative writing. The symposium features bilingual panels during the day and literary readings in the evening.

Private Nationalism is an international art and cultural project that Rokko Juhász has been working for since 2014 till now, as a curator and artist. Influenced by Benedict Anderson’s book “Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism”, this project has been questioning national identities and issues raised by nationalism through contemporary art in East-Central Europe. Rokko Juhász will share his practice in this project, and his own observation and reflection on nationalism and cultural identities as an artist/activist.

The Traveler is Always An Alien: The Drama of Travel Writing
2015-10-12
Abstract
Fiction teachers tell us to 'write what we know.' Travel writers--explorers, casual visitors, experienced drifters--always create a drama about things they do not know. Travel writers contend against the strange environment even as it gives them pleasure or excitement. The journey ultimately turns inward, and all good travel writing becomes a struggle for (and sometimes against) self-knowledge.

The End of Art and the Essence of Art: According to Arthur C. Danto (1925-2013)
2015-04-27
Here is a story about art, about its end and its essence. It is a story that raises two questions with respect to contemporary Chinese art: the first is whether the history of art has come to an end in China with its opening up to the West in the 1980s, as Danto says art ended in the West with the death of modernism. The second is whether his definition applies to contemporary Chinese art.

Means Without Ends Politics, Technics, Media
2015-04-23
Abstract
If capitalism entails instrumental or means-ends action, and moral conduct (Kant) bequeaths the kingdom of pure ends, then what is at stake in a culture of pure means? Benjamin gives us a language and a politics of pure means in his ‘Critique of Violence’ that has been an inspiration for anarchism and Occupy.
For Agamben and Hannah Arendt there is, on the one hand, the instrumental means-ends action of the oikos (economy, private) and governmentality; and, on the other, the political activity of pure means of the polis and sovereignty. Here Arendt explicitly draws on the aesthetics and technics of Kant’s thirds critique, the Critique of Judgment: on judgment’s Zweckmäβigkeit ohne Zweck, or means without ends. Kant was influenced by contemporaneous biology in which organic life is a means not to an external end but to its own thriving and surviving. Thus Kant’s third critique is based on organic life as a self-technics.
Foucault also develops a technology of the self – that is neither governmentality nor sovereignty (polis) - in the construction of our subjectivities. Yet here at stake is subjectivity as a closed system. Asian thought, with its Confucian and Daoist background and its fundamental dyad, may offer a way out from this closed subjectivity. But so can today’s co-evolutionary media - in which flows of information, images, data may lead to radical opening and communicational connectivity.

Talk: Paradoxes of Health and Power in the Zhuangzi
2015-03-27
Abstract
This paper explores paradoxical illustrations of power or health (de) in the Zhuangzi. It will attempt an alternative reading of the “crippled” characters in the fifth chapter of the Zhuangzi by looking them as parodies of the Confucian ideal of matching social constructs with a sincere commitment. It will argue that these characters echo the claim of chapter 38 of the Daodejing that “higher de is not de”, and thus ironically deconstruct the notion of quan de while at the same time also depicting a particular Daoist conception of health and power.

Symposium on What is China? (CCL)
2015-03-23
The notion of “China” (中國Zhongguo) remains a controversial issue severely debated at academic and popular levels. “Zhongguo” could mean a geographical site, a political nation-state, a civilization or a people. Its complicated conceptualization has been discussed and elaborated in modern scholarship. The publication of Ge Zhaoguang’s Hewei Zhongguo? jiangyu, minzu, wenhua yu lishi (What is China? borders, nationality, culture and history) has re-ignited the debate in Chinese communities and abroad recently. The symposium attempts to ask: What does it mean to speak of “Zhongguo” in the twenty-first century? In what way the notion of “Zhongguo” is intertwined with the growing world impacts exerted by the nation-state in Mainland China? How would the debate on “Zhongguo” relate to the self-understanding of the communities like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other neighboring countries?

Situations: Cultural Studies in the Asian Context - Annual International Conference
2015-02-13
Broad changes in Asia today are rapidly
transforming the everyday processes by which mobility/ speed, the sense of
place, visual culture, literary and cinematic imaginations,
body/subjectivity/desire, consumption culture, rights-based concerns, and so on,
are constituted. In postgraduate education, comparative works that rigorously
chart common questions and problematics, as
well as posing important conjunctural questions for the future of East Asian
cultural studies, remain rare.
This conference aims at bringing together scholars and postgraduate students
from two locales – or two distinct formations of cultural studies, if you will
– in Hong Kong and South Korea in order to chart a space of dialogue for
comparative learning and critique.
The conference will address the following two broad themes:
--- Cultural Studies and/as Movements in East Asia
--- Innovating Textual Methods

2015-01-23

Special Lecture: Food and the City – the case of Hong Kong
Date: 8 Jan 2015
Time: 10am – 12noon
Venue: LT1 Ho Sin Hang Campus
Speaker: Dr. Daisy Tam HMW HKBU
2015-01-08
We live in times of apparent abundance where food comes plentiful, but a closer look at our city would reveal that our food system is neither sustainable nor secure. Hong Kong imports over 90% of the food we eat and throws away an alarming 3400 tonnes of food a day. We have the highest GINI index of all developed countries and 20% of the population live in poverty where not everyone have access to sufficient food. The question of how to feed a growing population, manage our waste and resources are urgent questions we face. This talk raises some of the key issues in our food system and situates Hong Kong as an example of a wider global phenomenon.
Speaker:
Dr. Daisy Tam is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing at the Hong Kong Baptist University. She received her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London and MA in Comparative Literature from University College London (UCL). Her research interest focuses on ethical food practices, and is currently working on a project that looks at surplus food rescue/ food waste in Hong Kong.
